I remember that there's a difference. I've seen the question asked about this several times but have not seen anything definitive on it. Looking to find out more as I believe I've got an early one here. Only a couple of bolts keep me from knowing for certain. That, and I need to clean off the workbench!

2 15/16" was the bore on the K141 with a 2.50" stroke.

If I'm not mistaken the K141 piston is NLA but a 141 engine can be punched out to accommodate a 2.938" piston.

Someone please correct me if this information is inaccurate.

went out to the shop and grabbed my late 70's Kohler manual. it covers allot of the weird kohler engines such as the K331, there were 2 K141's as you mentioned. and 2 K161's. ser#281161 and under are 2 7/8 x 2.5 and 2 15/16 x 2.5. they had the same bore and stroke as the K141. hp on 141 were rated at 6.25 and the 161 was 7. apparently they use all the same parts as all their overhaul specs, clearance's and torques are the same. they all had the same valve size's 1 3/8 I and 1 1/8 E. so unless they changed the head, carb or turned it harder to gain their extra 3/4 hp they were all the same engine other than the bore change. About 10 years ago I rebuilt an early small bore 161 and we couldn't get a piston at that time so we bored it to the 15/16 bore. I also had a good 181 crank and rod so I put that in it just for fun.

For the record, my engine's service number is 28542E. Number above that (serial # perhaps?) is 660220.

6 digit numbers were used on pre 1965 engines but I've never seen a year to number range to tell which engines were built in which year

Default I THINK Dvog nailed it!

Had some time last night and wanted to do a little checking on the little engine.

I compared the lateral movement of the crank in this engine with the one in our puller. There was a LOT more play in it than the other. I always find enjoyment in cleaning up stuff as I "fix" em, so I pulled the flywheel and bearing plate and removed one of the shims (gaskets) from under the plate. When I fired it up, the sound was gone! Well, except for the grinding from the bearing on the driveshaft.

Pulled it apart and was amazed how worn the shaft was. That will be the NEXT item on the list. Planning on just building a new shaft and giving the ol girl a new bearing in the process.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
