Default finally more progress

so im starting to get things in order now. i mounted a jd 317 pto clutch on the vanguard. got a new carb and it runs great now. should be a nice setup lots of deck speed with low engine rpms and a recoil backup in case the battery goes dead or something. waiting for a different oil filter mount for the engine then i can bolt it in. to keep this rig from getting too long i shortened up the mule drive/deck hanger assembly by 8" so the deck is essentially all the way to the front now. i plan to chop off the extra frame in the rear once i mount the tires and build a hitch.

so the engine is mounted in. i had to notch the frame for the oil drain out the front and the oil filter on the side.

today i crudely mounted the rear wheels and chopped off the excess frame.

ill skip the boring details from here on. if anyone wants more detail as i go please ask

i can tell you guys that i had to widen the frame on the right side to clear the starter, and cut a hole in the left side to get the oil filter to fit. if this was still a 1650 im not sure how a vanguard would have fit without these "mods"?

the rear wheels are stock cub cadet front wheels. i mounted them on an axle made from HEAVY 1" square stock with a 3/4 hot rolled steel shaft plug-welded in each end. i drilled and tapped holes in the ends of the axles to hold the wheels on just like the front of a cub cadet tractor would be.

then i welded everything up and chopped off the extra frame in the rear.

i plan to pretty up everything once its functional.

next to build the hitch...

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
