Did some cleaning of the block and valve/piston area and think I know why I seen new cross hatching in the cylinder area. When I cleaned up the top of the piston, the sure sign of .010 was stamped on the top of the piston. I thought that the piston looked extremely clean and the block looked as good as well. Like I said before, this motor ran with alot of power,it was just bypassing the oil. I cleaned up the head and the only oil soaked, carboned up area was the exhaust area. I ordered new valves, springs and head gasket from Tulsa Engine and when they get here,I will try to see if this motor runs better..

Pat (& others), I'm just not seeing how you are pulling that much oil through the valve guide(s). Exhaust is a no-brainer, the pressure is in the wrong direction. Intake I can see where some manifold vacuum would pull some oil in, but it's an uphill battle and the oil would have to come all the way up from the valve cover area, which the valve cover should allow air to pass, and oil really shouldn't be flooded up in there anyway.

If you spin the engine a bunch of times, do you get a bunch of oil on the cylinder walls, like it's getting by the rings?

Was your valve cover gasket installed correctly to allow it to breathe and also the oil to drain back through that little bitty hole? I'd expect that to make the oil run out the valve cover vent holes though.

I do hope your valve guides fix it, and I'd really like to know if/when it does, just to add it to my "stuff I learnt" list in the back of my mind. I also wonder if maybe your rings aren't broken in yet because someone went overboard with honing or screwed something up during the apparent rebuild you've observed. Never trust someone else's work... Good Luck and Best Wishes on your valve guides.

As I posted earlier,if it were mine I would be looking @ the rings/cyl.
Maybe p.o. made a goof or possibly broke a ring on install or used std rings on a .010 over, who knows.
It don't take that much more to look deeper.
but I'll be quiet wishing him the best of luck.

That was my thought also. Either a broken ring or the rings ends were not staggered correctly. BTDT

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
