I strongly suggest NOT running anything heavier than 30wt oil. This engine's oiling system was not designed to pump anything that heavy. I don't really care what 2009Dodge's "ol man" says, or does with his air cooled engines.

I'm not a huge fan of the KT 17.. especially the series 1 engines.. I agree with others that the oiling system was a poor design... BUT i will verify that with meticulous care they can work and last. I have a 1980 782 that a friend bought brand new... I sat on it in the IH showroom when I was 9 years old. I now own that tractor and the engine has never been cracked open. This tractor has 1200 hrs on the clock.. the original owner changed the oil every 25 hrs and checked the oil EVERY time he started it.. kept it right on the full mark... insisted on IH low ash SAE 30 oil only... AND would not use the tractor at all in the ditches. He kept it in a 3 acre flat yard.. He also started and idled the tractor until it warmed up without revving the engine. That was just the kind of guy he was... took extreme care of everything he owned. This old KT 17 still runs good and has good power. Smokes just a little till you warm her up... It may be a fluke, but this one has lasted 37 years. We don't work it hard anymore but if it ever goes down I will hunt a magnum or do a repower with a more modern V twin... I wouldn't spend any money on the Series I engines.. just my thoughts Proceed as you like... IF you follow all the guidelines my friend did you might get lucky!
I wish you the best with it!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
