982's are just a stripped down SGT (super garden tractor)and I love them. They were the first supers built, most were painted red and they bring more money for that reason. An 1872/2072 is basically the same machine with power steering, dual hydraulics and turning brakes standard. Those were options on the 982's with the power steering option being different on the 982's. All 982's and the early 2072's came with an Onan B48G engine. The 1872 and later 2072's came with Kohler 18 or 20 hp engines.
I agree with the others, probably overkill for your yard but you'll have a big grin on your face when your mowing that .6 acres.

I dunno Todd. I wouldn't consider them stripped down. They had more option choices.... you could get one stripped down. But you could get one fully loaded too. Only difference is they didn't offer the power steering on the 982, whereas it was standard on the SGT's built after them.

oops, that's what I was trying to say. Not all had turning brakes and dual ports standard like the 18 & 2072's.

I'd love to have a 982, I'm a die hard IH guy and 982s are just plain cool tractors but they bring a premium price. I ended up with a clean 400 hour 2182 with a 60" deck for $1,300. The 2182 is not as cool as a 982 but for a working tractor the liquid cooled Kubota and power steering are really nice features.

They are BOTH costly to rebuild. Onan engines are near impossible to rebuild for the standard DIY guy. Parts are very hard to come by. Kohlers KT/Mags are VERY costly to rebuild. |

Unless you are a purist, and are prepared for the cost, I would not head down the rebuilding Onan road. Oak and I have done one (and others I'm sure) and I only did it to have an all original 982.
But I will add that the sound of the twin exhausts are really cool.

You forgot the IH built 190-364-100 Jon! This shaft driven 2 stages snow blower is on the implements list of the 982, you need the IH 419 front PTO adapter kit and the hanger bracket extension kit IH 196-421-100 to make it work. I don't know why but they never been offer for the 18/2072! That's a shame since I have that combo! (364/1872) If I find a IH 196-421-100 kit or have enough spare time to cut a "home brew" set of bracket, I give it a try instead of buying a 450 blower. Shaft driven and central lift system make sense to me.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
