I've bought both the Stens and Cub Cadet brand caps. They are identical other than the wrappers and the Cub cap was almost double the price. They do differ from the original slightly, but are far better than a brown lens and loose needle.

Yes, both seem to be the same OEM. I put the "Cub Cadet" cap in the 1811 and it was identical to the Stens.

I wonder if the 882/782D was the first CC garden tractor with a rear gas tank?
Obviously they liked the idea, since Cyclops, Series K, and LTX/GTX series all stayed that way until the XT series.

I believe that is correct. They also used a similar tank in the lawn tractors from the late 80's and up to. In fact they use the same fuel gauge cap as the diesels.

Got the carb and intake back on, as well as everything else buttoned up and the mouse nests blown out. Runs pretty good and drives great.
I do need to find 1 of those plastic clip/locks for the throttle arm going to the carb, and one clamp for the choke cable (which I should have somewhere).

Are those Stens ones long enough to go to the bottom of the tank on a 782? BTW nice work on the 782, does that one have the fuel shutoff on the carb?

No carb fuel shutoff, and yes it's long enough for both machines as well as the 1811. They're all Kulch OEM.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
