Thanks all. I'm leaning towards just replacing the pump at some point. More spare parts too!

Sam's price is very fair, but I may just look for a parts tractor. Who knows.

Some folks might extract the shaft and take it to a machine shop. They could weld fill the oval void, then re cut it smooth on a lathe and drill out a new hole. This new hole would perhaps be best 90 degrees from the original one. But I am just tossing out an idea- if any of the internal geometry is also fatigued, then my idea is no good. Some folks may also voice a concern over changing the hardness of the steel. I am no machinist.

I'd probably replace the pump, but once the tractor is running again, try and rebuild the one you have (no loss if it doesn't go back together without spare parts left over :-) ).

Plus , it's fun to see what's inside.



I took the transmission completely apart in my O and by carefully laying parts out in sequence as I disassembled it, it was quite straightforward to reassemble. I'd never been into one before.

I'd guess the pump would be more complicated but similar in the approach.

It's definitely not a difficult job nor does it take long There are actually very few parts in there. BUT, you do need to handle every internal part with care and keep all those parts very clean. Lay them out on clean paper towels, old towels or a bedsheet if you're not afraid of your wife. If the oil is clean, don't clean them in solvent or wipe them off. Just keep them clean!

But if you can buy a whole working pump for $75, then that's a no brainer to me. Even if you buy a cheap shaft, you may still have to buy a gasket and charge pump seal, plus possibly the front bearing.

Any machine shop would likely charge you more for a repair than to buy a new shaft.

Buying a parts tractor may well only get you more of all the worn out parts that you already have.
