Time to rescue this 1650

I got a little bit of work done today. It appears the drive shaft has a bearing it is supposed to sit in on the engine side, but that wasn't really the way this one was anymore. It appears the housing for the bearing wore out, and the bearing fell out. Then the end of the drive shaft wore uneven. I bet this created a ton of vibration.

So it appears, (using my terminology) I need a new drive shaft rod, a new input bracket and bearing. The good news is, I discovered I already have all the engine mounts. I don't know when I bought them, but I found a baggie with 8 mounts in it! Bonus!

I cleaned the axle cross member, and the frame a bit just to see how it all looked. Other than the fact that it looks like the previous owner must have hit some pretty intense stuff with it, it looks good. The axle pin shows a bit a wear that leaves me uncomfortable using it again, so I think I need another.


I confirmed that this was the right engine. It does look like someone did some work on this machine before, the over spray from the paint is a bit of a giveaway.




The underside of the axle crossmember. This is all cast iron. The chunks out of it are pretty serious. Maybe this is why the roll pin in the axle pin was sheered.



The frame looks clean, but there is some wear from the axle hitting the frame.




Input on the engine where the drive shaft goes in. There should be a bearing sitting in that hole, but it looks like it is out of round, and the bearing fell in.



I took that bearing housing off, and there is the bearing.



The end of the drive shaft that should have been in the bearing, but instead was moving all about.





The inside of the frame has a good chunk out of it too. Man the previous owner was pretty rough on this thing.

Back at it again today. The focus is to get the slop out of the steering box.

The hydraulic valve body is mounted to the steering column.







Column is out. Time to take a look.




Well, I can see they greased it. I looks dirty and nasty, but it is a good sign. It's mostly grease. Some previous owner left plenty of grease on all the grease fittings.




Now peek inside the steering box. I looks ok inside. Plenty of grease, no sign of water or anything else getting in there.




The pin that goes in to the gear on the steering box is definitely warn.





Well, off to order some parts. A new pin, a gasket, and good to go.

I think the grooves in the underside of the axle are from mule drive idler pulleys. Seems we had a 129 with those in it. I guess somebody ran it with a stretched or too long belt.

the notches in the axle are from having a belt that was too short.. the wear in the frame is from the motor mounts being shot

Great deal....I once found a 1650 the guy was going to take to scrap yard. Got it for $50, new plug, fresh gas fired up and I'm using it today to drive my 1A tiller
Interesting how some people give up on these wonderful tractors.
Getting a 1450 with extra set of liquid filled ag tires, qa42 snow thrower,50" Mowrer deck and extra parts today. And get this, the guys delivering it over an hour away to my house for $375 for that package! No way I could pass that deal up even though I have 5 sitting in my shop.
He heard from a friend I rescue them, and so the deal was made.
