Another sign it was the bearing there were metal shavings in the pto side crank bearing was the engine threw a rod and took out a small chunk of the cylinder wall. Odds are that is when the metal shavings got in the crank bearing.

The engine is ~5 year old and I cut about 1 acre about 9 months of the year. It's a k341 in a 1650 cc.
When it was rebuilt- I was at the maximum tolerance for the camshaft- but it was tolerance. I'll dig around on re-sealing. If time wasn't short before vacation- I'd just go through the engine and inspect everything as gasket set is cheap.
But I'm on a short fuse and would like to cut the yard this weekend prior to traveling for 2 weeks. neighbors tend not to like weed farms seeding their property.
I can make a short sound clip and upload it to youtube. I was just thinking a sudden seal failure is kind of odd and maybe something behind it. But new seal, oil change, airfilter and re-adjust the clutch(after de-oiling).

I just picked up a 128 and it has quite the rattle in the pto end. I was assuming balance gears as it has an aluminum pan but now thinking about crank bearing but have never heard or seen one bad, they are enormous and not sure how they would ever go bad unless having lack of oil.

Seriously..... you want us to try and type the sound of a blown head gasket? I tear engines down all the time and find blown head gaskets. People never knew. Even if you point it out, most still don't hear it. You can see the black soot at the point of the leak with your eyes easier.... They usually blow out at the exhaust valve. Easy to see.

Where's the video???

Now let me say this:
On a double breasted Kroller flathead, it sounds like a squeak & whistle,
when you snap the throttle open.
And you can easily tell which side it is coming from.
It also ALMOST sounds like a dull thud, but more of a whistle.
Most of the time you can actually see the head move a bit every time it fires on that bank.

Here's a blown head gasket. You can hear the whistle sound when it throttles up. I should point out that they don't always make this noise, sometimes you can only tell because the block is dirty by the exhaust valve.

Just to to throw it out there...........make damn sure it is not something external.

Such as the front belt pulley on the crank rubbing the bolt head in the block, previously mentioned.

Or the muffler mounting or shrouds. Seems like the deflector/muffler support that is held on via the head bolts like to crack around the head bolts and allow the sheet metal to be loose.

I guess tomorrow night I'll just start pulling somethings apart to investigate. I thought I should be able to narrow it down to a definative problem- but now I think visual is best. I'll get the muffler shroud off and poke around. I'll look at the headgasket area closely as possible around the exhaust valve area.

In the end-I think I've got a spare gasket- so I can pull it if need be. Seems like it takes me a bit of time.
