Well John, if I knew what I was doing I probably should have ran away from this motor when I saw it. I don't know what my plans are at this point. This is the first motor I'm jumping into this deep so I figured I'd pick a good challenge and I think I did good there. Looks to me like they are built pretty good but I wish Stens or some other manufacturers would make parts for them. I have found pistons that are about $80 with rings when Onan wants about $130 for them and the main bearings for $40 with the OEM ones at $124. Are they any good? I have not found aftermarket rods or valve parts yet and I think that is the weak link in these engines.
I need to run it into the machine shop and see what they say about the bore and valve seat. They make a replacement oversized valve seat but do I need to do all 4? http://onanparts.com/index.php?main_...products_id=67 I've been told that this model engine (out of a Grasshopper) had valve seat issues. I've also been told by my wife that I'm an idiot so that's why I stay out in the shop tinkering on stuff I don't understand.

Did they use this same engine in Deeres? If so check them for parts prices. I think it was my air filter I got for a LOT less than anyone else, including aftermarket. Sometimes Deere fools me regarding how cheap their parts are. Then the next time I need a loan to get parts. I've got a couple things for my B48G from ebay and maybe even Amazon.
Don't know what to advise about the seat. The machine shop just replaced the one that went bad in my truck and ground the valve to clean it back up. Darn thing just dropped out running empty about 2 miles from the house. Hopefully the shop you use can advise.

Off to the machine shop tomorrow. Ordered new 20 over pistons, 20 under rods, cam bearing kit, gasket set and a few other goodies. I found a place that has these parts about as cheap as if they were for a Kohler Command. The genuine Onan new style rods were $62.00 each, pistons $80 each with rings, cam bearing kit $48.00 and about $80 for a complete gasket set. Wow Todd, I have to admire your commitment to this old Onan engine.
Watcha gonna do with it when you're finished? I came home one evening to find that my Brother had used my overhead crane to unloaded a great big old generator that he picked up somewhere. I opened the hood and saw that the engine was an Onan, I scratched my head, closed the hood and walked away. Still don't know what I'm gonna do with that thing. Good luck with your project and keep us posted.

Fight the good fight Todd. Or... no don't do that, you'll get it figured out, hopefully. Man you got balls of steel to make this engine your first... The next one should be a breeze.

My first 982 had an Onan B48G ,I did the same thing to the intake but put a dot of loctite on the small nuts and bolts to make sure they stayed put.After a new float in the carb and this one had points and condenser it ran great.Good luck on your rebuild looks like you have a great start !

Your doing a fine job. I really have nothing to add, or any advice to give. Not much left of that thing really, so if you can save it good for you! The hard part about putting valve seats in aluminum is it is hard to make them stay. Maybe a good machine shop can slip in an oversize and get it locked in tight. Good luck, I'll keep watching! So.... where did you find parts? Or is that top secret? |
