if you didn't know, Cub cadet is owned by MTD corporation.
thus it would have been an OEM belt and should give proper service.
But it could need adjustment , and does not to hurt to look at it and see if it is glazed, chunked or otherwise in need of replacement.
Also look to see if any idler' (s)are ok and functioning properly,
as sometimes they freeze up on the pivots or tension springs break.

In 1981, IH sold the Cub Cadet division to the MTD corporation CCC, which took over production and use of the Cub Cadet brand name (without the IH symbol).

Coop, haven't you read what he posted. The engine is running, engine speed remains the same, he is able to drive it but has intermittent motion control at the rear wheels. Why the hell would you have him messing with the governor before inspecting the drive system?

Apparently, I missed post 7. I did however see post 5 the other post that said this began only after changing the throttle cable.

Make sense? The description and time line of this is somewhat blurred.

Thank you for the responses!!! I am trying to learn how to work on these older machines I inherited from my dad. Here are a couple of pictures where the throttle cable is attached. I also included pictures of the belt from the front. I agree that my issues started after I installed the cable. I found a service manual on line and have read the section on adjusting the throttle cable. I think I understand it but have not tried anything yet. So, any suggestions would be welcome. Thank you for your input!

Ya know I don't think I have never replaced a cable and had it end up right at the very end of the jacket like that. The end also looks like its bent a little for a new cable.

Ironman made some strong points about the rear and the belt also. I would be for possibly looking for 2 issues I think

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
