I've used Matt's static timing guide and it works very well. I have switched to a timing light and are able to get it set faster. I found one for $35 at O'Reilly's auto parts store.

I'll plan on swapping the points, and then giving the timing light a try again. will probably be a day or two.


Does anyone have the napa part number for the carb rebuild kit?

My local napa says they can't get them, I don't believe them. Guess it's not in the computer, so it doesn't exist...

Thanks for all the help.

I rebuilt the carb, and that seemed to smooth out the engine. It no longer loaded up as bad.

It still was running rough, and had a high RPM miss.

then I bought/ installed a chevy points conversion kit. This was really for convenience as I was just really tired of trying to adjust the kohler points.

just a tip, if you call them they will ship the bracket/cover for $5 instead of $10 through the site.

I also bought a new bosch blue coil hoping that would solve the misfire issue and it did. I gapped the points at 18, and then everything seems to now be running great.

I haven't tried the timing light to see if the weak coil was also the reason that the light wasn't working, as it is running fine now.

Default k-341 timing

can you do a compression check on the engine ,,you say its hard to start ,if the c/r spring is broke or weak ,it will act like that ,so if the compression is very high ,it could be that spring ,it did that to me ,but if you are to far advanced to far ,that can do the same thing .020 ,fot the points .hope that helps .David

Thats exactly the way it went for me.I was losing my paitence with mine but I finnaly got it and it runs good now. I am interested in the chevy points conversion. Is the conversion just a bracket that mounts to engine and then is drilled and taped to accept the chevy points? Which brings up another question or thought: All the points do are open to allow a spark to jump so any points that could be adjusted would work if they could be mounted? Am I correct?

Yes, it's just a bracket that mounts to the current points mounting point. Then, you are able to use chevy style points that use a screw to set the gap. much easier than trying to pry the kohler style points.

I would assume any points that you could get to fit would work. However, I don't like to reinvent the wheel when a cheap readily available solution is available.

Thanks for the though about checking the compression. It's weird that it's an intermittant problem.

Sometimes it will turn over without issue. Sometimes, the starter just won't turn the motor. If I turn the key again it will turn over. weird one.
