I know all too well about the back problems my friend. Watch what your doing and be careful.
As for the hard starting take a look at this link for setting your timing. It may help a lot. Also you may need to look at going thru and rebuilding your carb if you haven't done it yet. I did do the static timing procedure but I re-read the link you provided and noticed the part about backfire through the carb. This one does that which is why I thought it could be the compression release but I might better check my work as this was a first time procedure for me. I did not clean up the valves when I had the top off. I did not get the carb off and cleaned either. I believe it does have the adjustment on top of the carb but will have to wait for daylight to check for sure. I couldn't see well enough tonight without removing the base of the cover. While I'm laid up here I hope to get some of these bench top things done if I can. Curtis
