Thanks guys!
Currently I can't get the motor to fire, it's getting fuel and spark but it won't fire, even on starting fluid or a little gas under the plug. Also when I was trying to get it to fire the motor had locked up on my but I was able to free it up. Seems like low compression as well. The motor just got a tune up as well so it has fresh oil, plug, clean carb ect. |

Got spark??
Got a test light? |

You cannot accurately test compression due to the compression release.

Are there any other newer motors that would fit this tractor as a last case scenario?

If you have a compression tester you can test compression on the engine. Make sure the throttle is wide open, choke to to be open as well with the air cleaner filter removed. Wrap a pull cord around the drive cup on the flywheel side of engine. Make sure you wrap it in the opposite direction of engine running. Pull cord and take compression reading. You may have to pull the rope a couple times until the needle on the gauge tops out. This procedure is taken out of my JD 140 H3 manual for the Kohler 14 hp engine. 110-120 is a reading for an engine in top operating condition. Less than 100psi indicates bad head gasket, valves or bad rings.

Seems to me a test light is a hell of a lot cheaper than $1500. Or, I suppose, one could hang onto the plug wire to see if you have spark!! Ground the threads of the plug to a fin on the head and crank. You should be able to detect a spark at the tip of the plug, that is if you have juice through the points.
If you have spark, fuel and compression it will fire, that is unless the points have been screwed with so much they are all out of whack. Static time it first, no wait, you have no test light. How about a VOM (volt ohm meter)? Perhaps it is so badly flooded that the cyl walls are washed to the pint of no compression. Hold your finger over the plug hole while cranking to check for compression, some will be there regardless of the comp release. Could be there is a valve stuck open, remove the crankcase air breather to check for that. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
