Thanks. It probably is some gas, since the housing around the intake filter is missing. Got one coming. My mechanic, Mr. Google, says the crankcase needs to run with a small vacuum, which explains the plastic tube running up into the intake. So I'm trying not to run it until I can get that put together.

That is your crank case vent. You do need that hose to be there. But I don’t think you’d get gas in the crankcase through it if you have gas. Gas comes from either a sticky float in the carb allowing it to over flow and drain into the engine intake and ultimately into the oil, or a leaky fuel pump diaphragm. The negative pressure in the crank case runs the fuel pump if it’s not electronic. The diaphragm can get brittle and crack and let case drain right into the crankcase that way too.

If the snap[ on air cleaner cover lid isn't present on a 1641 and the tractor sits out in the rain, rain water will come in through the top louvers and run right in the air cleaner and get inside the engine if a intake valve is open.
