I have wound a rope around the cup on old chainsaws that used Faribanks recoils. I thought it was a backup system in case the recoil failed/wore out, its pretty common on chainsaws. Hey, it worked is all I can say. Not saying the part on your engine is or isn't part of a rope starter, just relaying what I have done with similar setups on other equipment.

K161S = Electric start
You will need a battery to start it. 12 volts to coil.

K161T = Recoil start
Has a magneto. No battery needed.

Both had the rope start ring on flywheel cup.

Interesting, I have been winding a rope around that pulley for my corn elevator near 40 years and it starts right up.
Admittedly, I have to blow the mouse nests out of the fins most every year, and it smells pi$$y when it first starts.
Once many years ago I put a magneto coil in it out of a 4 hp kohler,-- it was close enough that it still works and no battery needed.

Yea, that's interesting because the Bakelite coating they used on Bendix coils failed after a few years.

I needed to use it and it worked, seems like I had to put something into the center to make it tight on the laminated center bar, but to many years ago to remember.

Yeah I see that.

I was able to get a few puffs out of it, I'll see if I can rig up some gravity feed to the carb and get some actual runs out of it.
