For the record, the Operator's Manual for the 104 specifies that the transmission takes 7 pints of Hy-Tran or SAE 30 engine oil.

I use 2 liter soda bottles with the pointed gear lube bottle caps on them for nearly everything oil related. They work great, just don't squeeze them too hard.

I got one of these at Wally World.
http://www.walmart.com/ip/FloTool-Tr...Spout/16889149 The FloTool Transmission Fluid Spout comes with an on/off spout for adjustable flow. A reduced tip and 12" length makes it perfect for transmission filler tubes. An adapter allows the spout to fit on quart and gallon containers. I know this is an old post from 2013, but I thought it was better to resurrect an old post than start a new one with the same topic. I have a 1969 124 (so it is a gear drive), so naturally, this question pertains to Gear Drives only. I know the manual says to use Hy-Tran OR 30W oil. My question is, has anyone used 30w oil, and did you notice anything different in the way the tractor performed? Also, if I use 30w, I should use non-detergent just like the motor, correct?
Thanks. |

So I drained about 4 inches of water followed by 4 inches of snot out of the back of my 124. I used the Tractor Supply “traveler” brand hydrolic transmission fluid. Again, this is just a gear drive. It runs very happy now. No leaks, and it actually shifts into gear now without having to rock back and forth on the seat to get it to go into gear!!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
