When I added PS to my 1811 I used the 1864 front axle and spindles because they were already set up for PS. Also as someone mentioned some of the hydro lines have different ends on them from other models and that would be a little more trouble to convert them or replace them. I did not remove my tower and it didn't cause any big problems because it helped me set the column in correctly and mount it at the right height. It also makes anything that might be a problem for fit obvious when you insert the column into the tower. Also if you want to add front hydraulics now is the time to do it. You'll love it once it is finished. I have been buying and restoring/selling older John Deere garden tractors and they all had PS except for the 317. Makes you wonder why it is so expensive to buy the parts now when it couldn't have been that expensive back in the '80's. I used the PS valve from a JD 318 and it is the same one used by CC on their early models, (5 port). They are easier to find than CC units also. The only fabrication I had to do was the valve holder bracket that attaches the valve to the frame. Other than that it was hoses and fittings and a big smile on my face!

Was the 1864 the donor for all of your 1811 ps parts? Is the pump the same from your donor as the 1811? I wonder now if it would be easier to put the ps on my 1811 instead of my 1863. ok I looked in my book and answered my own question. I guess my 1863 is kind of a bastard it has the hydro gear, that figures.

1541 power steering upgrade
Hello: I’m new here and recently bought a old 1541 Cub Cadet. How many parts do I need to buy, in order to make the power steering complete setup off of a 1864 Cub Cadet, work?

All the steering components. The steering column, steering wheel to valve. The steering cylinder and brackets. The front axle would be good to get too. Get all the hydro lines from the 1864 and use what you need. Sometimes you can find someone selling the complete system online. The sponsors at the top will know what you need as well.

What is the serial number of your 1541? At 816,509 and above they switched to Hydro-Gear transmissions. The 1864 uses the Sunstrand transmission and the lines will be different.
