Compressed air with a blow gun. If you have anything other than dust and loose clippings then you need to find and repair any oil leaks. Water and electrical connectors don't play well together over time.

Spraying water on a piping hot engine is probably the worst thing you can do. Do it before you run it.

Been doing the pressure washing of my tractors since 1992 and have never had an issue....
Granted this isn't every time I'm done mowing, that would be stupid, and a waist of good water. Just at the end of the year for a good major cleaning before the winter hibernation. Only time I use the Simple Green type cleaner is when a "new" tractor is brought in to get years of old oil and dirt off. Nothing one owns should need degreasing, if so it also needs a repair....
