Gambrinus - I mowed with AGs for a few years before switching out to HDAPs. The secret to not tearing out your yard (especially if hilly) is to have the tires filled, or have wheel weights. The extra weight on the tires will cause them to bite in more and gain even more traction instead of spinning and making it look like a mud bog.
I have several undulations in my yard and a couple are quick small drops (3'-4') and with added weight I've never lost traction and caused it to tear any grass out. The bars just grab in and roll right on up. About the only situations I have saw with AGs tearing up a yard is on a 4x4 SCUT and the front tire AGs doing some tear out.
