" if you don't need weight why did you put a huge weight on that turning plow you restored? "
I'm guessing that what looks like it is a heavy weight in Matt's photo is actually the plow follower, which is a hollow steel wheel, probably around 5 lbs including its arm and bolts ![]() I've never weighted a plow, but it is common to weight a disc and/or a harrow. Your 149 looks like a nice deal. I agree with DX3 that I would replace the fan before too much more fun is enjoyed.

While you have off the tunnel cover, pay close attention to the rear joint of the drive shaft. I am restoring a 149 myself, and the driveshaft in them is one of the few short comings on these tractors. I am replacing mine with a QL shaft, much sturdier and a lot cheaper for replacement parts.
Since you just lost the fan, look at the rear coupler on the driveshaft, there is one flex disk there that could be going out, also there is a small pin on the back of the driveshaft that serves as a locator for the driveshaft, it slides inside a hole on the coupler that is attached to the hydro pump....it is maybe a 1/4" pin, yours might be worn badly, or be even completely gone. In either case, even with a good flex disk, it might allow side to side movement of the rear of the driveshaft which caused the fan to contact the lift rod for the sleeve hitch, there is not a lot of clearance between the two. I believe the service manual says to you need to unbolt the engine and slide it forward to get the driveshaft out, on mine, I was able to remove the two rear motor mount bolts and loosen the front two, then I was able to rock the engine forward to remove/ install the driveshaft...of course I was using a QL driveshaft, so that might make a difference. You will also need to pull the pin out of the rod for the PTO engagement rod as well to let the motor rock forwards, either way, you will have to remove the driveshaft to replace the hydro fan. You can get them from any of the sponsors as well as you local cub dealer, should be less than $20...Good Luck!!!!

The fan on my 149 is worn down to about the size of a golf ball with points on the ends, with the tunnel off it looks like the lift linkage would come real close to it if it were whole. Can't find a pic, i'll get one later.

That was the last series of tractor to have an aluminum fan. All after that were plastic.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
