As mentioned, you are the perfect candidate to let into the IH Cub Cadet club.

I like the unique crossroads features of the 147 (First Cub GT with 14hp, electric lift and last of the narrow frames), and I am currently restoring one from the frame up. However, a 129 or 149 might be a better choice. The wide frames have a bit more room inside the chassis to work with, and the hydraulic lift is probably a bit more dependable.

Take your time and try not to pounce on the first basket case you come across. Basket cases can be rewarding to bring back to life, but start off with something you can get up and running fairly quickly.

I like them all. but for me red is the way to go.

1- there newer, and still IH built
2- bigger engines

I have a 125. its hydro (not lift) but my red 582 and 682 will just run circles around it all day long. the 125 will still do everything the others will, like mow the yard. the 125 took 1.25 hrs to do it and used 1/2 tank of gas. my 582 will mow it in 45min and uses a little over a pint of gas. and has 2 cylinders too.
the trick is to find one that the PO took care of.

Or you can go for really low fuel use and burn about one tank all season.

Just ordered the book!

I do think a Cub Cadet is the smart way to go. I am tired of "throw-away" riding mowers and really do have fond memories of that first Cub Cadet.

I've been reading many of the posts and, of course, the internet. I've determine that I really do need:
1. Horsepower - I intend to get a trailer (my crafstman had one) for hauling stuff around the yard and the idea of preparing my garden with a cub is very interesting
2. Hydrostatic drive - I like the convenience of the feature
3. Hydraulic lift - I admit that I like gadgets!

I found a few on Craigslist last night...most needed work.

Take your time, ask us guys questions as they arise while choosing your tractor.
Most all models will serve you well, but the later models with more H.P. are usually more desirable.
Don't become discouraged, either while looking or repairing after you purchase.
Yes, these old garden tractors were built well
( as well as other color tractors of the time) before the manufactures were required to build to Gov. regulations as well as answer to stockholders for every extra penny spent on an bigger bolt or stronger piece of metal.
Some of us like myself, use them as a "tool" but not a restored classic.
others restore to better than new.
if it suits you, it's good.
Best of luck in your quest!

Most will probably need work to at least fix Previous Owner's fixes, (short cuts). These things are easy to work on, service manuals are available to help you with any mechanicals you need to work on and everyone here is very helpful and probably the most knowledgeable people I have seen regarding our hobby. Our technical libraries will have most all of the information you will need for most any GT you pick to own.

1. there is nothing like getting your garden ready with your cub!
2. I agree
3. Not a gadget but a tool! Theres a reason why the electric lifts were replaced by the hydraulic lifts.

Feel free to ask lots of questions. We love questions!

Have found a couple...most are a few states away. There is one in Kentucky that looks good. Unfortunately, this is the time of year when everyone is buying mowers so they sell fast!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
