Something to think about:
I would think that axles are case hardened, at least in the bearing/spline area. Welding will cause them to become brittle. Without annealing/welding/re hardening I would be apprehensive. the cost of welding/turning back to size will far exceed good used price.

George, I work in the welding Ind and have a few friends with the equipment so it really is no deal in my case and this tractor will not get used very hard as it is my toy.

I'd say go for it. Some of those guys can glue AIR together, they're almost that good! Best quote I've heard about my welds was that my chickens were P
 p'n closer together at least!  If possible, some pics would be nice to show the process and, of course, an update if it worked as intended. Info for the rest of us.

Well we got some parts to put the rear back together but I'm still waiting on the axles to be finished so sometime this week it will be a roller again but here is what he still looks like.
 I can hardly wait to play with this thing.
