Well, for me it's about how many coats of paint I will be using to cover the primer. I use a primer sealer, a red oil base [ try to ] , and the Cub Cadet paint. Some prep work I seen had the light gray primer before paint,.covers with less paint. I myself dont mind the extra paint required to cover the red primer, ie: like what the factory used on the IH Cub Cadet line.

What i am using on my 1200 is vansickle gray primer and IH off white #471(their #) and IH federal yellow# 454. I suppose to most purist my choice of paint they may not like, but it is my choice,my tractor. Hope to get some pics soon! As for different primers a buddy of mine is painting a IH 1466 and using yellow buff primer from John Deere and the red and white paint from Case IH. Which is kinda funny, but the yellow primer is the same color as what IH used on their tractors! I will admit I have used some rattle can primer on my 1200 too,I think it will do good, its going to be a working tractor, not a trailer queen!

I like the Valspar from TSC in the white but I dont like the yellow color. The Vansickle IH yellow looks closer to me but.... it takes foreverrrr to dry and Im impatient plus bugs and things can get stuck in it for hours and hours after painting. Ive never used the cc paint but the IH dealer paint is good stuff if your going to spray with a gun, I bought some to repaint a 730 case tractor one time and was very impressed.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
