Good points, Roland, I think most of the public shop strictly by price anymore, end up getting cheaply made stuff, and then blame it on the old "they sure don't make 'em like they used to", adage. In Cub Cadets case, I bet the vast majority out there don't see any difference between a 1000 series at a big box store and the much better built ones at a dealer, other than price. Cub Cadet is still somewhat of a very recognizable brand name to many from the IH days. In fact I've run across people who still think IH makes them.
You could go on and on with comparsons, those cheap hand tool sets with the wrenches and screwdrivers that round off the first time you use them, etc. I just don't understand the throw away mentality when it comes to items that you can still purchase well built quality that can be handed down or resold when the time comes you no longer need it.In many examples today, electronics come to mind, you really have no choice, it breaks or becomes obsolete, and you go buy new. Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
