I bought a pretty neglected QA42A and was lucky enough to find a QA36A in about the same shape but, it had some goodies I needed and for $20.00 it was a must. I had two old IH drive belts with the deal and was able to piece together and massage into working order a QA42A that operates but, still looks like its had a rough night for years.
I have been fiddling with this for a bit and at my leisure to get it blowing snow. It did blow snow but not very far and it would plug up very quickly. Pluggin up is just happens with single stage and this blower dig not let me down in that respect. I had my adjustments for sure and even pissed with knocking down some of the rough finish in the chute, it was still just not worth a darn. After doing my time on search engines and all the forums post that pertained to QA42As I finally read some guys belt lengths. I rushed out to the garage and pulled the belt, rolled it down a tape measure and found out it was a 32" belt. I went my Cub Shop today and as usual he came out of the deep dusty corners with a Gates cross reference belt of the size I needed, 1/2 x 30" as the 5/32s were so close why wait. $10.00 later I had the solution to my problem. Mounted up the belt, acheived proper tension and then went about blowing snow. Problem solved, blowing snow now. Thanks all |

anybody care to recommend a pulley diameter that works the best? i tried a 3" the other day but it spins it too fast. sounds like its going to come apart and slips the belt very easy even when tight. i ordered a 3.5 inch pulley im hoping that helps.

I have a 36a, and it was about useless with the heavy snow we got here. I now know I need to paint/ polish the chute, but sounds like a pully swap might also be worthwhile.

It's a standard 3/4 inch shaft pulley. Any hardware store should be able to get one. I ordered mine on mcmastercarr.com. Make sure is a cast iron pulley!!!

i just put a 3 1/2 inch diameter cast pulley on mine and id say its about perfect. it throws wet snow about 20-30 ft if i can keep it in the sweet spot. and if i go too slow to keep it full it throws it just far enough to not land back on the blower like it used to.
i tried a 3" first but was way too fast and belt slipped very easily.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
