I had a 14hp k series rebuilt about 2 yrs ago and it was 1100. That included all new kohler parts, machining of head, block, line bore, etc. alot of it depends on the reliability of your machine guy. Yes mine was a little pricey i thought, but i didn't have the time to mess with it at that point, and now, its turn-key, no issues what-so-ever. So overall i was happy with it, just my two cents.

Okay... Just my 2 cents here and please feel free to bombard me if I am wrong, but wouldn't it make sense to just get another engine or another Cub with a good engine for that price... Idk. There are plenty of K301's around....
Where abouts in CT are you from? I Live in East Haddam, CT

Which machine shop? I know of a few in the area that will quote you less than that.

I called my local machine shop and they quoted me $45 to bore and $45 to turn the crank. I didn't ask how they did it but they have a 4-5 day turn around. That sounds fair to me.

Thanks for the responses. I talked to the guy today. I was going to supply all parts so he could ensure they would match the machining. His $600 quote was for the machining ONLY! Spoke with Gary at www.larryspower.com which is right down the road from me and he quoted me about $250 for everything. He said the other guy was off his rocker.

I'm glad I've got a great engine builder in my neck of the woods. He charges $20-25 for cranks and bores and $15 for valves.

My 2 cents.
I spent a lot of money on parts for my 147 engine, like piston, rod, gaskets etc These were not cheap! If I just take the machining cost out. Bore the cylinder .020 over, turn the crank down .010, grind valve seats = $85 for just machining which I thought was very reasonable. The question about getting another tractor with a good engine is valid from a cost standpoint. My thought is that I know what I have when I am done with the rebuild and I don't know what I have on a used engine. Will never get my money back on the 147 engine, But it runs real good and should last for a long time. Plus I get to have you folks help me along the way too ![]() Regards, Chris

Sugar maker just hit the nail on the head. I think most of the satisfaction people are seeking comes from the process, not the end product. Anyone could go out and buy the finished product. The real joy is knowing that you have resurrected something with help along the way and you know exactly what was done during the process.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
