I have a couple of questions, maybe you can answer. I realize that there are same electrical adaptations that need to be done, but mechanically:

(A) Was the M-20 from a Cub Cadet Tractor..??

(B) Was this a "drop in" replacement..??

(C) If modifications were made, what were they..??

Yes, I did use the relay that is referenced on this site to make the needed electrical changes. The M-20 was from a older Poulan. Unfortunately, the ID sticker was faded badly so I do not know what the spec # for the engine is. It basically dropped right in though. I had to change the flywheel hub, which was just a matter of removing the hub from the KT17 and bolting it to the flywheel. The closure plate is drilled differently than the 17's for the cadets. I was able to use the PTO from the 682 w/ the KT17, but I had to rotate it 180 degrees to get holes to line up. Also, the two tabs that hang below the muffler to secure the muffler to the closure plate do not touch the closure plate and there are no drilled holes to line up with. I had to make a couple shims, about 5/16" thick with two holes 3/4" apart. One hole is drilled through and shares the same bolt as the PTO assembly. The second, top hole is tapped to secure the muffler tabs. The closure plate itself did not appear to be any thicker/thinner than the 17's, it just has different bosses/holes. The PTO slid all the way up to the closure plate until the small radial tabs on the PTO mounting plate seat against the face of the closure plate around the oil seal. The crank shaft does protrude out of the PTO about an inch, so the crank is a bit longer than the 17's, but it was the same diameter. The othe issue I have not resolved yet is the engine tins. My 17's did not have an oil filter, so the M20 tins that came with the 20 don't match up properly with the cadet tins. I will have to modify the tins or find tins for a new cadet with an oil filter in order to tie the exhaust shrouding in to the rest of the tins.

Bringing this back up, how did you solve the problem with the tins? I like the idea of the filter on the side of the block. What models would have compatible tins with a 6/782?

The Engine Shrouds (tins) for the M-20 are slightly bigger than for the KT-17.

One will need the shrouds off, say a 2072.

Roland, what is the specific purpose of the tins? Is there any risk if I were to cut my kt17 tins for filter access?

The purpose of the engine shrouds is to direct (or divert) the air flow from the engine cooling fins down and out the front grill opening.
