You can remove the rear cover and pop the c clip off then slide the axle out with out removing the whole rear. May as well change the axle seals while you are in the area. Ask me how I know.

^^ i might just try that, and yes ill be changing any seals that get disturbed. hopefully i can get enough push on the drill to get thru that grade 8 bolt.

i just found a few posts on the same issue, some seem to have put in a longer bolt with a nut on the inside of the rear. is this a better fix? or should i re-tap the threads and put it back to original?

If the bolt is broken the threads in the case are probably still good. Most of the time the threads strip in the alum case and then you need to pull it out and do something to deal with the issue. If you have any questions shoot me a PM with your phone # and I'll give you a call.

yes the bolt is broken, hopefully i can get it out with out destroying the threads/case.

Nice 1772! I love mine. You can get the fuel pumps at Napa. Good pumps and half the price last time I checked...........
