Got a paint estimate today

Costs me about $75 to paint a tractor--4 cans of yellow, 2-3 of white. My IH dealer has the spray cans for about $10 each.

Not perfect, but not bad either.

For that price, I would paint it myself.

Wow thats a little out there. Im planning on going to school for autobody this fall. We've got a booth made in the shop and im getting all the tools to do these types of jobs right. The collision side doesnt look as interesting as doing customers projects in my eyes. Thats what im hoping to do on the side and eventually full time. If you can spray primer you can spray topcoats, and personally i would go with enamel from case ih and hardener is a must! Ive had people ask me if i clear coated it, wet sanded and buffed it out.

That was double what I expected. I figured with me having it ready to shoot $500 would be about right. If I had a compressor big enough to do it, I'd do it myself. My neighbor growing up had a pretty well respected body shop. He's retired, but he may still do it.

Probably not a bad price as the painter is probably providing a fully restored tractor under the primer and your tractor goes to the curb...

On the other hand, the machine shop I called quoted be $700 to rebuild the motor. That's him doing everything, having it ready to fire up, and using genuine Kohler parts. The only thing I'd have to do is the carb and I'm pretty good with them. I've never rebuilt a motor, so he agreed to teach me during the process as well. Personally, I thought that was a really good price. I thought about working through it on my own, but I'd like to Cub with someone at least once to get a feel for what I'm doing.

If he is suppling the sealer,paint and clear that's a reasonable price all the stuff I just said would cost around 300 to 400 if it good quality like DuPont or PPG and then the has money paint cups filters and little stuff like prep-all to wipe it down and don't forget about his expensive paint gun and booth and the shop they're both in. Hey guys all this cost money and these body guys aren't making a killing. Trust me I know I'm a 3rd generation body guy.

^^ I agree. Ive painted a lot of equipment. It's harder to paint than a car because of the odd angles. When we've shot tractors here it runs between 5 and 6K. If he's supplying paint, I'd say that is a pretty good price.

That's too much. I can have a tractor blasted and powder coated for $500 if I take it apart. I spray all my stuff in my front yard and can do it for $50.
