It is not a piece of a shifter fork,as they are formed or stamped steel. It is not a piece of the case/housing as it is not the red color of the coating/primer of the housing.
I will post a few more pictures as requested by Austin. Thanks for the help so far.I plan to open it up soon to investigate.

Really looks like a piece of the casting that holds the reverse idler gear still. But you say it's not red. I'm really not sure what else it could be. Good luck Tim I hope it's nothing serious.

Today,I took off the rear cover and didn't find anything wrong.I didn't see anywhere that piece could have come from. Then I took the top shifter cover off and didn't find anything wrong.Didn't see any place that piece could have come from.I even split the tractor and took off the front reduction housing cover and removed the big reduction gear.Still didn't find anything wrong, still didn't see where this piece could have come from. So,I just buttoned it back up,put it all back together.I am stumped.

Well, if there is no metal, and you didn't see anything it's probably ok. If you start to hear any noise in the rear, I guess you'll know!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
