I was able to start the axel in the c-channel of the frame going in at the top. Used a rubber hammer and hit upon the cast iron axel, driving inward the axel home. Being careful not to swing and hit foolishly, came to a certain point where I had to change gears a bit.


A 4x4 block of wood, and a 6# hammer got the axel in motion.


The holes begin to align.

May I ask why you just didn't squeeze to just under 3.310? ( 3.300 would have worked and been much easier to get the axle back in )

What happened the first two times I had tightened the squeeze bolt, the gap opened back up to 3.343, and 3.340 respectably. All that I can say is that on the third time I tried to set the gap closer, I over tightened the squeeze bolt. Having done that, I thought I would try to force the axel in position, rather re-open the gap. I was however, having difficult time getting a better gap set point as you mentioned 3.330" .

There's times at work after machining a casting it'll close up or spring open. I usually spread/squeeze the part, measure and see where it springs to. Then make an adjustment on how far I go.

And yes,sometimes even the most carefully designed plan doesn't work and it goes too far
