Spark (Hz) cycles per second
S = 2 for four Stroke or 1 for two Stroke
C = Cylinders per coil
60 = Seconds to Minutes
Hz X S / C X 60 = RPM

30 Hz X 2 / 1 X 60 = 3600 RPM (K series)
30 Hz X 2 / 2 X 60 = 1800 RPM (KT series)

Not to be used on magneto type coils (no low voltage connection) unless you have CT (Current Transformer) clamp. Clamped around the spark plug wire.

This works on most points/distributor system.

KT's or any opposing twins and most magneto's. No distributor but fires on both compression stroke and exhaust stroke the later is a waste but cheaper than adding a distributor system.

If you get Hz value that a too high to believe that is contact bounce but the condenser take care of that.

A little of topic
Newer automotive system with individual coils can give multiple sparks per compression stroke.

Well I ordered on of those photo tachs. Waiting for it to get here. Gonna see how it works. Thanks for the heads up on that one. I would have never guessed to look for something like that.

Now I gotta ask. Where would the best place to put the reflective sticker at? On 3pt clutch driver? On drive shaft from motor to clutch? On edge of mesh that covers fly wheel? Hummm. I would think any part that is spinning at crankshaft speed would tell me.

Thanks

John

Got my photo tach in and set it up on a Farmall Cub and it seems to work great from 474 idle to 1784 open. They are suppose to idle at 500 rpms and advance to 1800. Easy to work, put in a battery, put a 1/2 inch of the reflective tape on the subject and hit the test but and read.
I don't have any other rpm method to test it on, but will take it to a CubFest and try it out to compare to someone else's.
At least I can now get an idea. My 1250 doesn't seem to crank 3600 rpms and my 109 seems to turn more. Will not open it up. My 1000 seems to be right on but will test them now with the photo tach.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
