Before you try to start it take a good look at the coolant level. If it toasted a head gasket or cracked a head it may be low and you could have a cylinder full of coolant, you will hydro lock it and hurt it bad if you try to crank it over. Also check the oil to see if it shows signs of coolant in it.

Having issues again. After fixing everything and tractor running ok for few years it is overheating again. I should say that the gauge is pegging after a few minutes of running (10 or so ). I am not sure if it is really overheating. Using a laser thermometer I get about 150 at the sender 150 at the top of radiator and about 210 at the engine where the exhaust manifold is attached. I think normal is 175 so is this really running hot or is my gauge bad?

Sounds like the gauge or the sending unit. I would replace it with a mechanical gauge if I were you.

Tim any suggestions on what to use as a replacement. Have you used any you like? Any one else with a suggestion? Brand or part number?

I've always had good luck with Auto meter gauges and they have a ton of different style faces so you can get one that will look right for the application.

I haven't had great success with autometer gauges. VDO is my preference these days. You should almost be able to hold on to the upper radiator hose continuously at normal operating temps.

Also, make sure your radiator cap is good and then pull the overflow tank lid/hose while running and see if there are any bubbles coming out. If so, you've got combustion gasses making their way past the headgasket into the cooling system.

I did a conversion on my 1772 and kept the original gauge installed under the hood along with the hour meter just to make sure they read the same.

IIRC, you won't find anything that will fit into the original sending unit location.

I purchased a gooseneck(what I call it) from Rich Patton off of a 1782/2182 that has the sending unit port on the engine side of the thermostat & water pump. This will give you a true reading of the circulated water temp inside the engine. This will give you the room to mount any type of mechanical sending unit.

I purchased this set of gauges from O'Reilly Auto Parts.

But you will have a problem with the clearance on the back.

I made a spacer to get the clearance I needed.

The gauge reads the same as the original gauge that is still mounted under the hood and so far I have had no problem.

Anyone know what the thread on the original sending unit is.

Oak,
The one I have off a 2182 and is different than yours. Didja switch over the outlet for the upper radiator hose and drill/tap the little stub sticking out on an angle?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
