I agree with the others, you don't NEED a fuel pump but the way I see it, for less than an hours time, a couple beers, and $40, you could replace it and never have to worry about it again. This is the one I put on my 682 because it had a bad fuel pump when I got it like yours does and I haven't had a problem with it since.

![]() ![]() If you were spraying carburetor cleaner down the intake of the motor, then THAT is where the brownish liquid puking out the carb came from. NEVER spray carb cleaner down the intake of a motor, unless you take the plugs out and crank it before you try and start it. Even then, I wouldn't suggest it. Your just flushing all that junk INTO the motor, instead of getting it out. Not saying you don't have something wrong with your engine, but what you did with the cleaner is what made it puke. It doesn't take much liquid in a motor to make it puke. Carb cleaner is not starting fluid, and when it washes all that gunk in the motor, it definitely will flood it. Start your diagnosis over. This time without carb cleaner. Or, if you want to clean it, take the carb OFF the motor. It may have a sticking float. No, pulling the fuel pump wouldn't have hurt it. Like I said, check the carb, I'd say it's a float issue. |

Bought a section of fuel line and bypassed the fuel pump. Removed and cleaned the plugs. Cranked the engine several times w/o plugs to eject all liquid from the combustion chambers. Reinstalled plugs and cranked 'er up.
Voorroooom! Engine sprang to life and ran like normal. Mowed some leaves in 40 MPH winds just to satisfy myself. After cleaning leaf matter out of my ears, I was satisfied and quite happy to have my mower back among the living. ![]() Sincere thanks to all for your advice on the pump and carb cleaner, etc.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
