Thanks everyone... I have to say, I am uncomfortable pulling the engine based on my experience with this sort of thing but looks like it is time to start learning.

My 1872 has the oil sentry system....unplug the green wire from the sending unit and see if you have spark. Or the 3 wire connector on top of the engine.

I'm thinking ignition module... I have to pull the motor to replace this? Could it be something else? I really hate electrical issues!! Thanks for any advice!!
Are you sure its not in the safety circuit do you have a print its a lot easier to double check that verses pulling the motor I don't mean to contradict anyone I'm not an expert. Just adding my 2 cents. How checking for voltage from the key switch out or starter back ?

I had a bad ignition switch that caused the same problem your describing. However it was on a 1541, others have more experience than me on a 2072... it's at least something to check, and the kill wire mentioned in previous post should bypass all safety switch for testing purposes. Good luck I despise troubleshooting electrical issues.

There is no voltage from the key to the mag. Just a kill wire. If you disconnect it at the motor, and it still doesn't work, it rules everything else out.

Is there a box somewhere? I've not seen any pre-cyclops tractors with that system. Not trying to argue, but the parts book, service manual, and wiring diagrams show it didn't come out with one. It has a low oil pressure light, but that is all the books show.....

The 1872 I used to have also had a decal on the blower shroud that said oil sentry on the right side as you sat on the tractor. I had assumed it had the sentry as well. It was the original Mag 18. The tractor is long gone now. I by no means am an expert on the oil sentry's, but I believe it had one.

My 2072 had it but the engine was the 18 magnum from a 1862. My current 1872 has the oil sentry thing as well

I just want to make sure that we are giving correct information. I have seen the decal before on machines I have worked on, but I believe it is just in reference to the fact that the motor has an oil pressure monitoring system. As far as what I have seen, there is no wiring that connects the oil pressure sender to the mag kill wire. The wiring diagram backs this up. Can we confirm? Again, just trying to make sure info is correct. We don't want someone trying to chase an electrical circuit that doesn't exist.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
