Received a message from the seller. Turns out the PTO clutch is inoperable. Not sure if it's a broken part or ? I'll go through the parts manuals and see how it all goes together so I'll have an idea as to what it SHOULD look like.
I hear there's big $ in fixing a clutch. Would anyone care to put a decimal to that dollar sign? How much does it take (usually) to fix a clutch in one of these things. I'm hoping to get the tractor for under $800. Would a clutch double the cost? I'd do the work myself, but I can't manufacture parts! thanks!

But this is what appears to be a new PTO clutch assembly from Ebay for about $400. The guys got good feedback so maybe someone else from here that has more experience working on them can comment but if memory serves, this should be the whole, correct assembly. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-POWER-TA...-/281275833409

Thanks JimBob!
That helps me understand a little better also. AND, the same seller has this rebuild kit, so if everything is there and rebuildable, I could go that route also. So long as the tractor moves around and only the PTO is bad, this still seems quite viable. Already downloaded a manual for the tractor directly from MTD, so I've got a little more info. The manual takes a while to download, but it's worth it!

If your rebuild it yourself, get the parts from here. I use them a lot and as you see, prices are good. The one jimbob posted a link to on e-bay looks like a very good deal for the $$. Probably the quickest and easiest option.
Thanks for the link to that service manual too! I didn't have that one in book or PDF format! SWEET! |

We had a 185 for a few years, the good is that if you think a Cub Cadet is built tough a lo - boy is even tougher. For mowing wide open areas it will work Ok but don't let the grass get too tall or power will be a problem. With sharp blades and grass not too tall I could mow in 2nd gear and do a good job but probably did more mowing in 1st than 2nd. For mowing my 2162 with 60" haban deck is twice the mower the 185 was.

I own two 154's,one for 15 yrs with a snowplow and the other one with a front end loader for a year and I have never had any problems with the clutch or pto,if the one you are looking at has the rear 3 pth, dual breaks, mower deck and runs good $800 is a good deal and worth fixing.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
