If the guy selling them has a hilly yard, try driving it up the hill. if it slows down or stops but the engine speed stays the same, you've got a bad clutch. (or bad traction, but that's darn easy to diagnose.) Jonathan's method works very well too, unless you tumble upon the problem I abruptly discovered last fall, a weak brake band. I had my left steering brake snap inside the housing at a moment I really needed it. very exciting! if you do that on a test, you might be in a "break it you buy it" situation. also, I do not think that part is inherently weak, I think mine breaking was truly a freak occurence.

Well, here are some pics guys. Bad news is that neither one of them would run as the batteries were dead so no checking out the engine clutch on either one. The body on the first one here seems to be in better shape other than the "grill" front grill, literally. there also was a small leak from the carb, but they guy said that it would go away once started anyway...

and here is the second one. turns out the red 154 was the wrong picture that his daughter put up. Let me know what you guys think. BTW it does have an IH carb and IH deck. As you can see, I wish I could combine some parts off one and put on the other...

They look good! Get the one with the AG tires. Then, bring them down and trade me for my turfs. LOL!

IH didn't really build the deck. Yeah, it has IH on it, but near as I can tell, it was made by either Danco, and Woods bought out that line of mowers later, or it was made by woods. Either way, it is NOT made by IH, just decaled by them.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
