Our 2072 came with a command 18 in it. It ran but was not done to our satisfaction. With a little reworking and a new drive shaft it is doing well. IIRC Sam Bam the super man once stated that the CH 18, 20, and 22 are exactly the same engine just a different carb. Of course the M20 as I recall has a different electrical power generation system than the CH command engine.

I was a Kohler guy but the Vanguards are cheaper and run awesome. What are your plans with the tractor? If your going to run it 100 hours or less a year I would go with the Vanguard. Diesels are great but finding a good one and making all the mods to the machine will cost a bunch of money. I think you could drop a 23 HP Vanguard in it for less then $1500 and have an engine that was better then the original that should last for over 1000 hours.

Rebuild or put a rebuilt M18 or M20 back in it. Yeah they like to drink some fuel but are simple to work on, reliable, and make gobs of torque. Fit up is easy it's stock.

I got my rebuilt M18 from here. That was a few years ago and it's doing fine.

I have ordered a reman engine from kustomlawnandgarden.com 1499.00 it a long block but for the money I think it better option for the money.
