Putting a fan on the front of the engine blowing back will most likely make things run hotter as the normal flow of air on all my cubs is from back to front. The advice to keep everything as clean as possible is golden. Any debris, crud, etc has a tendancy to hold heat and if bad enough restricts air flow. On my 2084 super I take the cylinder shrouds off at least once a year and thoroughly clean all the fins and then replace them of course. I ran without them for a short while and the engine seemed to run hotter without them.

Ditto.

It only take a few minutes at full load to bring the engine to full operating temperature. If everything is clean it will handle the heat. I usually run 10w-30 oil in mine no problem.

I remember that post!

I tell you what I need, another weekend of nice, cool weather so I can pull the engine and give it a good cleaning. That, or a nice PTAC in the garage to take the humidity out of the air. Hmm...where to find a used PTAC

What I do

No matter what I use a leaf blower After EVERY cut of my lawn, deck, motor . No matter what!

I also use synthetic small engine oil 10-30-30 W. Runs about 12 to 15deg. cooler. I posted the results last year on a 95deg. Day last year. Comparing a 35min. Cut & changing oil & doing it again.

But was told by a friend that it would be better to give the old cubbies a break after every 30min. On a 95+ day. So I do just to be SAFE.

But it's your cub------ DO WHAT YOU WANT!

I'm anal.

NIK.

I tried the compressed air into the front while running.

Tip 1. Keep away from the muffler/exhaust elbow. Not speaking from experience, something I had to keep telling myself while it was running.

Tip 2. Keep away from starter belt/pulley. See explanation above.

Tip 3. Watch out for the flying crap coming back into your face.

I can't believe how much came outta there. Good tip J mech

I also found out that I can clean out under my deck (sorta) by driving it up on ramps. Beats taking the deck off. I don't know why I didn't think of this before.

I guess the fan is out then. Another dumb question. How about straight lucas? Lucas actually recomends running it straight in small engines. I know its expensive, but should last longer. I run synthetic in EVERYTHING, but also add lucas as an extra precaution.

Tried the same thing here with a leaf blower, worked alright. I'm sure it'd work better with an actual air compressor, though

I'm sure someone will chime in with a more technical answer but I personally wouldn't. These engines have lasted 30+ years on straight 30wt and they're still going strong. As far as I'm concerned, don't fix it if it ain't broken

FWIW and others have stated, keeping it clean and full is really all that's needed. I used a 782 back in the day for 8 hours of mowing duty a day with no issues. Good luck and have at it!

Yep, as long as the fins are clean and you have decent oil in it no reason to worry.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
