BTW Sam, I'm ready for the critiquing/suggestions from the Cyclops guru for what I need to check into! lol

So guys, as much as I would have loved it to be an 1864, I'll have to settle for this guy. She's in good running shape, although she will need a bit of TLC before she's in tip top running condition. The engine is in great shape, no smoke, sputtering, doesn't burn oil, no weird noises, etc. The trans doesn't make any weird noises but I still plan on changing fluid/filter asap. Also, it will need the linkages adjusted because as it sits, things don't allow it to get to top speed right now. Other than that, PTO works fine, wiring seems decent, I don't see any fuel or hydro leaks so it's got good potential. Anywho, on to the pros/cons as well as a few pics. Hope ya'll approve!

Pros:

Machine only has 459 hours on it
Solid engine. No smoke and fires right up
Plastic panels are all in pretty good condition, save one crack in the hood
Deck spindals are all in good shape, spins easily and freely

Cons:

I'll have to re-run the fuel line as some stupid a$$ PO ran it outside the fenders. WHY?!?! (you can see it run by the brake pedal)
Hydro linkages need adjusted as she doesn't get up to top speed in forward or reverse
Couple good scratches on both sides of the fenders
Steering is a bit loose

Anyway, on to the pics!

Alright guys, I've got a few questions about the new toy. Please bare with me as I haven't had really any time to do any in depth research so some of these may be easy ones.

1) This is my first CH motor. Can I remove tins without pulling the engine to make sure there's no mouse nests tucked away?

2) Is there a service manual posted anywhere for this? I took a quick look in the technical section but didn't see it.

3) How would I go about adjusting the hydro linkages to get full travel? With the lever full up right now, I can't get much past what I consider mowing speed.

4) Is the steering box similar to the ones used in older Cubs? I'd like to get the slop in the steering taken care before it gets bad.

Thanks guys, and wish me luck with the new toy!

What are your plans for this one Ryan? I'm thinking the steering box parts are the same, I seem to recall reading that the bearings and I think the cam follower pin are the same part number for my 782 & 1861. My 61 has a really loose gearbox too but I've been using it too much to take it apart. After fixing all the tie rods & the front axle clevis on the 82 it really isn't bad. I have the parts sitting here to overhaul a steering gear...... I just haven't found the proper motivation yet.

Enjoy the new ride...

Once I get the couple kinks worked out, I plan on making this my main grass killer. The 54" will hopefully cut my mowing time down as I'm currently using an 1811 with a 44" deck. As for my other 2 1811's, I'm not sure what there summertime job will be. One will be my blade runner and cart puller but until winter comes around, who knows what the other will be for

Majority of shrouds can be removed w/o pulling the engine. But pulling an engine in your case wouldn't be very hard. Would allow you to degrease everything/ pull the drive shaft to inspect, clean, and re grease, along with making a lot of other things, including your steering box more accessable. You got a good machine and far as I kno, the main differences between the 1864 &1863 are power steering and the hydro pump. 1864 uses a sunstrand, 1863 uses a hydrogear. Good luck!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
