That sounds typical for those especially if run low on oil. If crank is good figure $60 for a new Kohler rod and if piston is bad then $250 for Kohler piston and ring kit. Sounds like cam was taken out by the rod then figure that and gasket kit and it adds up quick.
The M18 I am building is going to come in about $700 for gasket kit, two new rods, new rings, governor, used cam and used crank.
