1541 - opinions on oil leak?

Thanks. I was in a hurry while doing this which is how the seal got pushed in too far in the first place, but also I didn't look around at what was behind the seal either. Things always go wrong when working too quickly.

So, I started the engine and everything appeared fine, no oil leaks. I start mowing and after about 30 minutes I hear a metal sounding noise as if I may have ran over a dog chain or something. I shut it off instantly and look around, NOTHING! I can't find anything anywhere that had been hit nor is anything wrapped around the blades. The center spindle looks like it's leaning forward quite a bit, although when I grabbed the blade everything seemed tight. I pulled it in the garage and called it quits. That's my 2nd failed attempt at mowing the yard in the past 2 weeks. I'll be looking for a Bush Hog before I get Cubby going

Edit: also the deck drive belt (from engine to deck) has fallen off

Check the mule drive pulleys, one of the bearings may have disintegrated.

I went out and checked and both pulleys are fine. The belt is partially shredded but still not broken. Maybe the noise I heard was the mule drive pulley rubbing the front of the mule drive when the belt popped off. I wear nice hearing protection so it's hard to tell exactly what I heard. To me it looks like the center deck spindle leans forward at the top but it's possible that it's an optical illusion or it's always been that way and I've just never noticed. I can put my finger between the deck and pulley at the rear side but not at the front side.

I suggest that you ask the question about the mower in the implements area. You will probably get a faster response. That said I'd pull the deck off and check it out.

The noise could have come from the belt - I had one let go this past spring and it sounded like bedlam under the tractor until I reliazed what had happened and shut the PTO off!

Regardless of your woes you've got to remember it's an old tractor and she'll need some maintenance, but that's what makes it fun! And all of the helpful people here are a super resource as well! Good luck on your tuning/maintenance!

So it's leaking at the front of the engine again, and although I haven't torn into it yet I suspect it's this seal again. If it's this seal leaking again, what should my plan be? How can I stop this seal from spinning? It doesn't have many hours on the new seal.
