personnaly I wouldn't worry about it. either the bearing has to move on the crank or in the block or bearing plate when you check the end play, I pretty much always reuse the ball bearings unless there's something visibly wrong with them

I'm reusing my ball bearings they turn free and smooth no slop on them. They don't make a lot of things like they used to especially bearings.

That's not really true. When it comes to bearings, you get what you pay for. Bearings made now are actually really good, if not better. You just have to pay for them. Timken is #1 when it comes to bearings. A lot of the old bearings in IH's are Timken. BCA, National and SKF are all good too.

As far as seals, Timken, National, SKF (old Chicago Rawhide) are good seal companies.

I've never went wrong with Timken. But expect to get out your checkbook when buying them.

Rather than start a new topic, I'd like to ask a question about the crankshaft bearings. I read the Kohler manual last night on assembly of the engine. I was a little perplexed with the end play measurement as my rear bearing (and front to some degree) were tight on the crankshaft. I figured something has to move for end play measurement - either the bearing in the housings or the shaft in the inner race of the bearing.

Am I correct in that the bearings are supposed to be a slip fit onto the crank shaft so it can actually move and measurement be taken?

I wound up cleaning up the surfaces of the inner race and crank shout and I can slip the front bearing on by hand now. The rear bearing was tighter - but it is going on now, just not as easily as I would expect if that is how it is designed to be.

End play is set with the shims on the rear housing. All in all, it really doesn't matter where is slips. On the crank, or in the housing. The need for end play is so when everything gets hot, it doesn't side load the bearing. No need to make it any more complicated than that.

I understand the end play, it's just the first Kohler I've built.

Cam end play is within spec. Then I went to the crank and the bearings were tight on the journals. Just wanted to understand how it was supposed to work. Both bearings press into the case and cover (at least mine did) so I suppose it has to slide on the crank.
