which style piston do you have? they show 3 different pistons and how to measure them. the very early 10 hp pistons get measured at the location below the oil ring. later pistons get measured a 1/2 inch above the bottom of the skirt.
the side clearance is the difference between the piston size and the bore size. a quick check with a set of long feeler gauges puts ones mind to rest and will catch an error of a wrong size piston. it should be the same all the way down the bore |

When I check the bore, I put the wrist pin in the piston, turn it (piston) upside down and insert it in the block with a ribbon gauge (long feeler gauge). Then, I rotate it and move it up and down the bore. Should be no tight spots. you should feel a "slight drag". Shouldn't be loose with the piston and ribbon in it, but it shouldn't be tight. Rotating it lets me know that the bore is round. If it has any tight spots, then it isn't round. Don't really have that problem with Kohler engines, but dry sleeve motors you do. Like the older IH motors (263, 301, 407....) Always have to bore those engines out with a rigid hone to make them round.

Oops, forgot about the three styles. Mine is a style "A", so it is measured just below the oil ring.
