A little late to this post but did you keep the balance gears. You mentioned it runs smooth as silk! Curious as I'm getting ready to rebuild my K301.

Just curious, has anyone done a vibration analysis on a K series with/without the balance gears? Thought some actual data might alleviate any questions/concerns about leaving them in or taking them out. Where I used to work the millwright group attached accelerometers on all our hvac equipment to help with predictive maintenance. It would be interesting to see some data like that regarding these balance gears. Does anyone know if these gears were to help with rotating balance of the rod/piston assembly or was it to help correct a harmonic vibration? (taking them out, is the crank/rod out of balance slightly?) I'm taking mine out just to eliminate another chance of something going terribly wrong in the future. Opened up my oil pan just to check condition of things inside (cleanliness, chance of surprise pieces in pan?, etc.) and found the balance gears on their shafts really sloppy, along with the rod journal and wrist pin with excessive movement (nothing clunking but definitely worn past clearance limits). Sooooo..........off to the machine shop, something I was hoping not to do at this time but in the long run I won't have to do it in the near future either (and I might be saving a block casting). More money spent to get this rig running but ultimately more dependable too. As I plan on using this to do some tilling, a new rebuild should be a step in the right direction. Now to find a machine shop in this 'new to me' area.............

Went with popular opinion and took the balance gears out. Installed new piston, rings and rod, installed valves (albeit with an unconventional tool. Don't laugh too loud, it worked first time perfectly. Adjustable kept the valve closed and the open end allowed access to the keepers. Didn't even need 6 hands to make it work. Amazing what you come up with on a limited budget!), adjusted the ACR to opening spec, planed the head, installed painted tin, now on to the frame so I have something to put this engine into. Just hope it runs!

Well lol is good! Heah whatever works , I had the machine shop remove and install the new valves since I didn't have the tools or patience to do it. Let us know how she runs!
