You can't by traditional methods. You either have to unhook it, or spin the motor backwards to check it.

Got the engine put back together last night, seems the cleaning made a big difference. I ran it for about 30 minutes with the intent of going back and re-torquing, now I can't find anything in the service manual on that, I don't know where I got that idea from. If it's a bad idea someone stop me
![]() ![]() While I had the tins off, I took my brand new POS laser temp gun to see how hot the head gets while the engine is running. I am registering 250 degrees on the head, I imagine it will run cooler with the tins on forcing more air to go across the cooling fins. Just out of curiosity I measured the temp on the muffler, 500 degrees at the point where it connects to the engine and 200 at the other end, with the temp gradually decreasing across the length of the muffler. I am surprised at how well it dissipates heat. Thank you everyone for your help during this process, I think I'm good to go for this year(and many years to come) ![]() |

Yes, your supposed to re-torque the head. It's in the manual. Not sure why you can't find it, it's in there.

Thanks Jonathan. I should probably just go through the whole service manual anyway, tons of useful information in there.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
