Yesterday olds45512 says a 12 hp with the oil dipstick on the left side is a newer model than a k301. Maybe it's a magnum series engine?

no, its just a K301. it could be the original engine for the 127, the top mounted stick was in the 124/125 yet. I'm not a 100% but the side stick had to have come out sometime during the 126 run

Maybe "newer" as in a replacement narrow frame Cub K301, one that was not ever installed in a Cub but built to be.

Is the dipstick on left engine painted black ?

I have a mid model 126 and a very late production (1971) 127 and both have the original engines with right side dipsticks behind the S/G.

I will post a couple pics tomorrow. The "spec" sticker has been wiped off, there is a 12hp sticker on the flywheel cover. Thanks for your help tonight!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
