A good hydraulic shop can cut the cylinder apart and repack/seal it. It will be expensive though...

Here's where I had my hydraulic cylinder rebuilt for my swivel push blade on the 1650. We use them for everything hydraulic with our earth moving company.
They needed to cut the end off, repack and build a new shaft. Price was $236, basically brand new. (sorry, don't know all the technical terms)

I understand the desire to get your lift system fixed so that it works and acts like it should, if I had one that dropped like a rock (as you have said your's does) it would probably make me a little crazy too.

Out of the 10 or so Cubs that I have with a hydraulic lift, only two (the best I can remember) will stay in the raised position fairly well. The rest creep down over time, some worse than others, but never-the-less they do creep down. They will only creep down far enough to hit the lift stop (which in my mind is not a lift stop... It's a "lower stop") and that is as far as they will go, period.

On my mower tractors, the "lower stop" is set to my desired cutting height, when I pull out of the shed, I "drop the deck" and it lowers until it hits the stop and I cut grass.

Here is the part about Maxwelhses case that I don't understand:

The stops on all of the Wide Frames that I cut grass with are such that they can be set to a cutting height way higher than I would ever want to cut grass, I don't understand why the stop on your 149 won't hold the deck to your desired cutting height. Even if you had a hydraulic lift that worked perfectly, wouldn't you still lower the deck until the outer rock shaft plate hits the stop cam?

Once again, I do understand and don't discount the burning desire that comes from within to get something fixed (especially when you are about to go stir-crazy).

OMG you mean there are others that have the disease? I thought I was the only one that had to fix something even if I might never use it!
Or even worse, if someone says it can't be fixed

For less than the cost of a shop rebuilding yours, you could likely just pick up a used one. They seem pretty plentiful and not too expensive.

Yes, you dont know exactly what you have that way. But they dont seem to go bad all that often (at least, thats been my experience). Some others might chime in with more insight, but Im not sure its worth paying someone to rebuild.

My newly acquired 149 deck does sag over many hours. The lift stop can prevent this from happening.

My burning question is, if/when the day comes that I can no longer lift the deck, what am I to do? I'm not handy enough to rebuild the hydraulic lift and get into all that. Would it be possible to install a manual lift?

Yes, sure. The manual lift, sometimes called "armstrong" lift, can be installed on a 149. Most of the 129's (same as the 149, but with a 12 hp instead of a 14 hp, had the manual lift on them. Same parts and same set up. If you think that may be an option for you in the future, then I would start hunting the parts now for it and place them aside. The only thing is, installing or removing one of those manual lifts requires you to jack that cub up quite a bit!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
