If you pull up a IH built 982 on Partstree it shows two different part numbers, IH-144744-C2 & IH-144777-C2. Is the second number just the dipstick or a cover with the dip stick? My dads 982 was about 500 before that one and it has the stick but it also has the rear lift & pto.

My interpretation is the 14477# is just the dipstick (gage). The other is listed as an assembly. The parts diagram does not show the a cover top with dipstick, just a flat plate. If I remember, tomorrow night I'll look at dad's parts book and see what his shows, its old enough to be an actual IH edition.
